The Times (£): King James Bible and fabric of State (letter)
Sir, The Prime Minister’s speech celebrating the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible sets out clearly how Christianity is foundational to the character of the nation and the way in which the Christian faith permeates every facet of life in this country.
We applaud David Cameron’s acknowledgement of the debt we owe the Bible in the development of our political history. He notes the Christian foundations of our national life and the influence of the Bible on the emergence of a constitutional monarchy. He distinguishes between our democracy, which has emerged because of biblical ideas about dignity and equality, and the somewhat elitist democracy of Athens, which is often trumpeted as the birth place of democratic ideas.
